What to Do on a Long Ride

Long rides can be either a peaceful escape or a tiresome ordeal, depending on how you prepare. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few tricks to make long journeys more enjoyable, whether on a train, bus, or in a car. Comfort is key, so I always bring a travel pillow and a light blanket, no matter the season. Even on a bus with air conditioning, having something soft and warm makes a world of difference. I also swear by layered clothing since temperatures can vary dramatically during the ride.

Entertainment is another essential. My headphones and downloaded playlists are non-negotiable, and I always carry an e-reader loaded with books and offline games on my phone. On one memorable ride through the Swiss Alps, I alternated between music and simply gazing out the window—it was unforgettable! For those moments when I can’t sit still, I incorporate light stretches, like leg movements or shoulder rolls. On a 10-hour bus ride, I even made it a habit to walk up and down the aisle during stops to keep my blood flowing.

Snacks are my secret weapon. I’ve learned the hard way that relying on random stops for food isn’t always wise, so I pack a mix of healthy snacks and indulgent treats. My favorites are trail mix and granola bars—they’re easy to carry and satisfying. Lastly, I bring along a travel journal to document my journey. Whether jotting down thoughts, sketching the scenery, or simply doodling, it makes the time pass and creates lasting memories.

With a little preparation, long rides don’t have to feel endless. In fact, they can become some of the most peaceful and reflective moments of your trip. How do you make long rides more enjoyable? Let me know your favorite tips!
